Are You Foster Ready?

Fostering an animal while it awaits a permanent home is incredibly rewarding – but it’s not always easy. Watching a dog become comfortable and confident that he/she is now safe and will be forever loved is worth every effort. But it does require work and sometime trial and error. Most dogs come into care with some issues, developed through no fault of their own, but typically the fault of the humans who failed them — so we really appreciate those who are committed to doing all it takes to set their foster animal up for success. This can include basic “potty training” or helping a dog learn to walk on leash. Sometimes, an animal may be recovering from surgery and need regular medication and quiet place to rest. Every case is unique.

If you currently foster or are considering applying to foster, here are some things to know:

VHS provides basic needs including food, a collar and leash and bedding. Small gifts such as treats and toys that you would like to provide should be at your own expense. We strive to do all we can for every animal and the VHS budget is strained with necessities and vet care. We, and your foster pet, deeply appreciate your generosity!

VHS assumes all costs of veterinary care and grooming but we really need you to be able to take the pet to his/her appointments as needed. This is really important as we don’t currently have a volunteer able to do transport — so the job often falls on our Executive Director Penny Stone, and believe us, she is already super busy! Do note that appointments must be arranged by VHS.

Guess what sometimes happens? Something you probably haven’t planned but can’t resist – you fall in love and want to keep your foster. We understand, giving up the animal can be the hardest part of fostering and you are welcome to apply to keep the pet. Just do know, the adoption fee will still apply.

Please consider fostering. It really is one of the best ways to help! Our Foster Application is located here

You are the lifeblood of our work on behalf of animals.

As a non-profit organization, the Victoria Humane Society depends entirely on donations from kind-hearted people like you. Every month, we rescue literally dozens of dogs and cats, and sometimes other small animals, many from horrific circumstances such as neglect, starvation and abuse. The associated costs of rescue are significant, from arranging transportation for the animals out of remote communities and into our care, to emergency medical bills to save animals lives, to spay and neuter costs, vaccinations, hospitalizations, medications and on-going food costs and incidentals. Monthly and one-time donors are literally our most critical form of support. We thank you for donating what you can today.
