Puppy Adoptions!

What could be more fun than a day with puppies! Thank you to all the volunteers who attended and to the Westshore Town Centre for providing the space for a very successful puppy meet and greet April 30 and 31.

People were invited to come by and meet the 25 puppies we had in care and apply to adopt if they met their match. People who had applied and been approved were able to take their puppy home that weekend and one of our favourite stories from the event was of a family who did just that.

Mom, Dad and 13-year-old daughter came in to speak with Penny. The daughter didn’t know that her parents were finally going to let her get a puppy, something she had been dreaming of since she was 3 years old. When she found out, she actually laid on the floor and cried, and when the puppy of her choice (a Rottie mix) was placed in her arms, she was visibly shaking with excitement as the tears ran down her face. There was not a dry eye among the volunteers, it was just so emotional. The family came back the next day with their puppy to let him play with his litter mates and were already declaring theirs to be the “best dog in the world”.

We almost always have puppies, and until VHS secures a shelter, these meet and greet events are the best way to manage people and puppies at once. When we have a shelter, people will be able to come by and see the puppies (and other animals). We will likely continue the off-site events as well because it builds awareness and it’s just so much fun. Come on out and volunteer next time!

You are the lifeblood of our work on behalf of animals.

As a non-profit organization, the Victoria Humane Society depends entirely on donations from kind-hearted people like you. Every month, we rescue literally dozens of dogs and cats, and sometimes other small animals, many from horrific circumstances such as neglect, starvation and abuse. The associated costs of rescue are significant, from arranging transportation for the animals out of remote communities and into our care, to emergency medical bills to save animals lives, to spay and neuter costs, vaccinations, hospitalizations, medications and on-going food costs and incidentals. Monthly and one-time donors are literally our most critical form of support. We thank you for donating what you can today.
